RE: Using the MH during the winter

We drove from New Mexico to California, stopping in Arizona where it was down to 20 degrees. We just had to unhook the water hose after filling up and use water from the water tank. David

RE: First time in RV - California Trip Advice

I think that you have too many days in the Santa Cruz/ Monterey area. It is about 35 miles from Santa Cruz to Monterey and another 35 to Big Sur. These are easy day trips in the US. Add an extra day or two if you want in Santa Cruz and maybe rent a car to see these areas. For example the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Having an RV is great with small kids since they can be active at the playground or your RV site and beaches of course are great for kids although you might need light jackets. Hotels are much harder to find things to do when the kids get restless. So, now with a few extra days you might think about going to Los Angeles to go to Disneyland, that is if your kids are into Disney movies at all. They are not too young to enjoy it. There are RV parks with shuttles close by. You could go from Santa Cruz to Yosemite and then to Los Angeles. You might take 2 days to get to Los Angeles. And 2 days back to San Francisco. We are going to LA this christmas and then up to Monterey for a couple of days. David David

RE: I-10 Travel In December

I-10 has been closed a couple of times in the past 20 years around christmas due to snow in El Paso and southern New Mexico. Winds aren't usually as bad as in the spring. David

RE: Super Nova 6400 - need your opinions!

I can't comment on the Supernova specifically, but we went from a TT where we had to make the beds every night to having bunk beds in our Four Winds 34H. And even with just 2 kids it is much nicer not to have to make up and take down the beds every night. They can go to sleep whenever they want and we still have a table and sofa available. David

RE: Gulfstream conquest 6319dk VS the Fourwinds Kodiak 34H

We also have a diesel Four Winds 34h and are very happy with it. Just some minor quality issues. Others have had more problems. We have 2 kids and find that the bunk beds are great for them. Ours has the entertainment center in front which has a single bed. I think that since the floor plans are very different, that would be what I would use to choose between them. David

RE: Suspension upgrades on 07 Seneca HD 35GS

That is not true. With the proper rear springs the coach will not roll over from side to side. A properly sprung vehicle should not need a rear trac bar. That is just a bolt on band aid. Trac bars and stiffer springs solve 2 different problems. On a solid axle suspension there is nothing other than the spring to stop any lateral movement. A trac bar locks the suspension so it can not move laterally. Stiffer springs will allow less body roll and up/down movements. Although stiffer springs will also add stiffness to the suspension so there is less lateral movement, they do not solve that problem. The Seneca's already had the 15,000# springs and it could certainly be that after upgrading to the 19,000# springs, a rear trac bar would not make a noticeable difference to the handling, especially considering the price, but there would be an improvement. On our Four Winds 34h, I didn't add my rear trac bar separately, so I can not comment on it effectiveness. I did add the front trac bar afterwards and it made a definite improvement to the preciseness of the steering. David

RE: fourwinns 34h 12 volt power wont work

I have a 2007 Four Winds 34h. I am not sure which is the isolator, but there are 2 places it would be. Pulling out the drawers underneath the wardrobe closet is where the converter, inverter, and some other stuff are. The other place is by the batteries. You will see them if you open the compartment. You certainly don't need to have any cord plugged in and we have not had the problem you are seeing. David

RE: Santa Fe, NM to Creede, CO in a big rig. U.S. 84?

We did that trip in July. It is an easy drive taking 285 to 160. There are no mountain passes or steep climbs. No sharp curves. David

RE: Kodiak 5500 headlights

The easiest way to replace the headlights is to remove the plastic surrounding the lights. I think there is 4 screws (torx heads). This will make it very easy to reach the screws for the headlamp. David

RE: Kodiak Headlights Again

Yes, they work fine. They are a direct replacement, no work involved other than unscrewing the old and putting in the new. It is easier to remove to cover surrounding the lamps first. I got the free-form DOT lamps. Friday was the first time I had driven at night with them. They are certainly much better than the stock lamps, but still not as good as the lighting in my cars. This is with the stock bulbs that came with the lamp, so maybe a bulb upgrade would help. David

RE: Seneca Tire Pressure

The CAT scale I used had three scales. One for the front axle, one for the rear axle and one for the trailer, toad on our case. Just line up your axles and then you will get a printout with all three weights. David

RE: Best way to keep the toad battery charged up?

There is a product called toad-charge that connects to 12v from the motorhome and charges you battery. We have the Roadmaster Even-brake which is also proportional, and it would use up the battery in a couple of hours without the toad-charge. Now the battery stays charged. We have a 7pin connector on the motorhome, so I put a 5 pin connector on the toad and used the 12v wire from the motorhome. Though the toad-charge does come with everything to connect directly to the motorhome. The Brake Buddy is only activated on emergency type stops and so it does not come on very often so that it usually does not use the batteries as much. David

RE: Durango Suspension

I have a 2005 Durango Hemi, tow package. We had about the same weight TT before our motorhome. Better shocks, especially for the rear will make a large difference even when not towing. The Durango is much too softly sprung. You should be able to keep the Durango level just with the WD bars. I added the Airlift air springs, but never used them since we bought a motorhome. On our previous '99 Durango, using the air springs helped stiffen up the rear while towing, which makes it much more stable. David

RE: Durango towing and mileage

I have an '05 Durango 5.7 Hemi w/towing package and 3.92 gears. Had a 27ft TT, probably closer to 6000 lbs. Got between 8 and 10 mpg. Closer to 8 on the freeways and lower elevations. I get about the same mileage as you when not towing. We previously had a '99 Durango w/ 5.2. I put on the K&N filter and cat-back exhaust. They did increase the gas mileage by 1-2 mpg while not towing. I am not sure if they helped while towing. I haven't added them to the '05 since they usually do not help as much on newer cars and the '05 gets ~2 mpg better than the '99 anyhow. We have a motorhome now and most comparisons on gas vs. diesel with it show diesel getting about a 2 mpg advantage, so this seems reasonable that with your Chevy you would get 12 mpg. David

RE: Four Winds Dealer

We have the Four Winds 34h. I have had it weighted at a CAT scale, but could not check each side. This was loaded for a 10 day trip. http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/20791758.cfm We have been very happy with it. We looked at the Senecas, but because of their additional weight might not have been able to tow the Durango. David

RE: Never RVed before - What items might we not think to bring?

Most likely you would need extensions for all the hookups. Usually the electric, sewer, and water all just a little bit too far for whatever comes with the trailer. David

RE: Santa Fe / Taos: Too Cold in Feb. and March?

It snowed some last night and yesterday, maybe some more tonight. Nothing stuck to the road here in Los Alamos or Santa Fe. We still have snow on the ground though. You can certainly still get heavy snowfalls this time of year. Temps have been in the 20's at night and 40's during day. David

You should read this description in the Wikipedia. It describes the problems with the interpretation of the 2nd amendment. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution David

RE: Weighed our Four Winds 34H

The Four Winds 34H was not in the 2007 brochure but was on the web site last year. Ours is a 2007, so it was added sometime during the year. It has the bunk beds and 2 slides. No rear storage area. One slide on each side, so I am guessing that our weight may be somewhat even. The freshwater tank is in the very rear of the RV, behind the axle, so if it was completely full it would probably lighten the front some. The Cargo Carrying Capacity is listed as 687 lbs. Unloaded Vehicle Weight 17,769. The wheelbase is 241.5. Except for fresh water and LP gas not being completely full, we were loaded about as much as we would ever be when it was weighed. I did look at a gas 32B at the same time. It weighed about 1000lbs less. But, the kids saw the bunk beds, so we got this one. David
